Madurai has its own airport, situated around 10 kms from the city. It has daily direct flights from Chennai, Bangalore, Trichy, and Coimbatore. Madurai is a very important railway station and comes under the fold of the Southern Railways. It is directly connected to places like Tirunelveli and Chennai. One of its assets is the Vaigai Express between Madurai and Chennai Egmore which covers the distance of 495 kms in less than seven hours. The state of Tamil Nadu is known for its excellent roads. Madurai is very well connected by roads with different parts of the state and the surroundings. Madurai city itself has five major bus stands.
